TEAM CLASSIFICATION

The USSSA team classification system is the key to equalizing and balancing team competition in tournament play. USSSA DOES NOT CLASSIFY LEAGUES. USSSA does classify individual teams, in leagues, for tournament play. The class definitions establish a point, or guideline, which is used by the classification committees to evaluate teams. The main criteria are:

  • Past history of the team.
  • Tournament results.
  • League results.
  • Amount of participation last year.
  • Results of State, N.I.T., National, and World tournaments.
  • Offensive power.
  • Defensive skills.
  • Determination of the ability of the players that have been picked up for the coming year.
  • Four or more players from previous year’s roster.
  • Home run capabilities.
  • Team roster.

The Home Run: The home run capability is only a guide for establishing a team’s classification.

CLASSIFICATION APPEAL PROCEDURE

Appeals must be submitted, in writing, to the appropriate Program Classification Committee Chairperson (see below). Absolutely no information will be taken over the phone. Any coach has the right to appeal a decision made by a Program Committee or Program Director to the Executive State Director of Washington. A coach must contact the Executive State Director and request a time and place to be heard.

The information needed that must be furnished in the letter is:

  1. Date, name and location of USSSA tournaments played.
  2. Classification participated in (example: ‘D’ only, ‘B’-‘C’ equalizer, etc.).
  3. Tournament record.
  4. Names of teams played against and scores of the games.
  5. Roster additions or deletions. (Where player previously played).
  6. Results from any tournament prior to the March 1st and after Labor Day will not be considered for appeal. (Men’s Program only).

The program classification committees conduct periodic reviews of the team’s classification and have the authority to reclassify and require any team to play up at the next highest level at any point during the season. If a team has reason to believe that it has been misclassified, it may deliver a written petition (using the appeal process spelled out above) to the appropriate program classification chairperson requesting a review. Teams may play up, in a higher classified tournament, but may not play down in a lower classified tournament.

ALL CLASSIFICATION REQUESTS SHOULD BE SENT TO THE APPROPRIATE PROGRAM CHAIRPERSON, IN CARE OF:

USSSA POST SEASON PLAY

USSSA OFFERS PARTICIPATION IN POST SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY (STATE, NATIONAL and WORLD TOURNAMENTS).

Guidelines to enter one of these events are as follows:  (NOTE: Does NOT apply to the FALL Men's Program)

  1. Be a REGISTERED USSSA team.
  2. Win a BERTH* through tournament play.
  3. Win a berth on POINTS through tournament participation.
  4. Meet the program QUALIFICATIONS.
  5. In all programs all teams are required to have their roster on the ISTS website (see our website for instructions on how to do this) prior to participation in any NIT, State, National or World Championship tournament.

*BERTHS:

  1. Tournaments will award berths and/or points to either a World, National or State Championship (Except January and February Tournaments).
  2. Berths won are not paid berths.
  3. Teams winning World berths will also receive State Berths.
  4. Teams winning berths prior to July 1st must submit their entry fees and rosters within 14 days of winning their berth. If there is any doubt as to whether or not you have won a berth, contact your appropriate Program Director. Teams winning berths after July 1st will be contacted by either the State Office or the Program Director and the entry fees and roster must be submitted immediately.  Failure to do so may result in the loss of the berth. Once a team declines or fails to pay for a berth on time, the only way for that team to advance to post season play is to qualify through an Invitational Tournament.
  5. Previous year’s State Champions automatically qualify for the State Championship of their current classification.
